Top 5 tips – Getting to interview

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

The Office for National Statistics has reported this month that unemployment figures have risen again.  The job market is a tough one for job seekers and it looks set to get tougher and with Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) coming into force on 1st October 2011, things may change again.

Unfortunately, there are now more people fighting for less jobs and, doing the sums, this doesn’t look like it stacks up or works out too well for job seekers.  Giving yourself the best chance with your job applications is essential and we have gathered together a selection of our top tips and guides to help you on your way.

Breaking into the job market is really all about the 3 Ps – Presentation, Preparation and Professionalism.

Presentation - present your application, and of course, yourself well at interview if you are lucky enough to get through to that stage.
Preparation - make sure you research the company, understand them and prepare your answers (our article on Interviews and Dating may help you on this one).
Professionalism - really speaks for itself – make a good impression and remain professional.

Phase 1.  Getting through the door is the hardest bit.  Read our guide on how to increase your chances of interview here…

Phase 2.  If your application makes it through Phase 1, you may get a pre-interview – the telephone interview.  A telephone interview is just as important as a face-to-face interview.  Make sure you are prepared – read our Top 5 telephone interview tips…

Phase 3.  Got through that bit – Phase 2 complete?  Now you’re heading to interview and the age old worry about what you should wear.  It’s a tricky one, but we’ve got some advice for you here…

Phase 4.  Suited, booted (or maybe not) and sat in the interview, but be careful what you say!  Body language speaks volumes – get clued up first..!

Phase 5.  So, the interview is going well…then the dreaded question comes up…Why do you want to leave your current job?  How do you answer it?  We’ve got some tips to help you…

Good luck!

Good news for temporary staff

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The recession is making life financially difficult for many companies, and it is understandable that they are having to be more stringent with their staffing budgets.  According to the latest figures from the REC, there has been a trend emerging where employers are opting for shorter term staffing solutions until things become more stable in the economy.  Whilst we understand this isn’t great news for the permanent job market, it’s great news for agency and temporary workers!

Businesses are all watching their spending and whilst many are keeping their staff but tightening the purse strings, sadly many businesses have had to let staff go.  Things are moving in the job market, but figures for the employment of permanent staff were down on last month’s results.  On the plus side though, the JobsOutlook survey showed that around 83% of employers were considering using temporary staff over the next year.  Temporary employees are an ideal solution for businesses as they offer flexibility to the company and a shorter term financial commitment – which is validated by the fact that around 1.6 million temporary staff are employed in the UK at present.

At Headliners we understand the need for both temporary (interim) and permanent staff and offer a flexible range of recruitment solutions across interim and permanent assignments at director and manager level.  Give us a call today to discuss your next temporary or interim (or permanent!) marketing vacancy – 01189 123 100 or 0207 100 5477.

Just as a side note, if you are considering employing temporary, agency, interim, contract or freelance staff, then be sure you understand the AWR (Agency Worker Regulations).  This is a European Directive that comes into force on 1st October 2011 and will affect most businesses.

Agency Worker Regulations – The Word is Spreading

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

October 2011 is creeping up quickly (as is Christmas by the way but we don’t want to shout about that and upset you… 135 days to go in case you are interested!).

Any business who employs temporary or Agency staff is likely to be affected and the word on AWR is spreading.  Our recently published article on Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) has been featured on The Guide2Oxford.com Daily.  We’d like to thank them for helping us get the word out about AWR, and for helping us advise businesses before the European Legislation comes into force.

This month (August 2011), Headliners are offering a FREE AWR consultation with one of our Senior Consultants or Directors.  They will visit your office to provide you with AWR advice and guidance and explain the new regulations, outline your corporate obligations, advise on who is included within the AWR scope, take time to understand your particular circumstances and make recommendations for next steps.  Read more info here…

Headliners will also provide AWR checklists and propose a path forward to ensure you are ready for the introduction of the new Agency Workers Regulations on 1st October 2011.

Contact us on 01189 123 100 or 0207 100 5477.

The Situation

The Agency Workers Regulations come into force on 1st October 2011 and potentially can affect any company who employs a temporary / contract / freelance / interim worker.

So, if you are responsible for recruiting workers into your marketing / office team, either directly or indirectly, make sure that you understand your new obligations!  There are some heavy fines that can be imposed on non-compliant companies, so avoid that worry and get ready for the 1st of October.

What can you do?

If this is all a bit hazy – or perhaps you have no idea what we’re talking about – and you feel you need to seek some advice, then rest assured you can call for help from Headliners!

Our Offer:

Headliners will also provide AWR checklists and propose a path forward to ensure you are ready for the introduction of the new Agency Workers Regulations on 1st October 2011.

Applicable Dates:

These sessions can be booked any time between 1st August 2011 and 2nd September 2011 – but book early as the offer will be restricted to the availability of our senior consultants.
